“It’s an island thing…”

This is the name of a new event recently launched to keep us sane throughout those bleak winter months. A place to bump into friends at the weekend and arrange to meet again, as the winter social season kicks in…

This new monthly winter season event is the brainchild of Pikes Hotel, just outside Sant Antoni, and takes place once a month throughout the winter.

Behind this new monthly winter season event is Octavia Coates, the new Director of Pikes Hotel and owner of The Playlist Agency. Located, just outside San Antonio, “It’s an island thing…” takes place once a month throughout the winter from November to April.

The appointed day is the last Sunday of each month and the fun begins with Sunday Lunch from 1 pm. This features ‘the finest homely winter seasonal fare from heart warming soups to the finest traditional British Sunday roasts’. The renowned Damien, of Aura & Las Bandaras fame, so you can rest assured that the food will be top ranking and the prices are extremely reasonable for what’s on offer.

This is followed by the After Party, which showcases the island’s finest DJ’s and features guest performances by international artists. For those unfortunates who can’t make the event, since the next one is on December 23rd (and some of us do Christmas in the UK), it is being broadcast live on Global Radio 97.6 FM (and at www.ibizaglobalradio.com). But there is always January’s party to look forward to… WATCH THIS SPACE.

The underlying motive for treating us all like kings this winter is to familiarize us with the fact that Pikes is not only ‘open’ to island dwellers, but positively welcomes them, and this is just a prelude to major changes being made by Pikes for the summer 2008 season.

pikesIt has been an island icon since the early 80’s, thanks to guests like Freddy Mercury, Grace Jones, Julio Iglesias, Kylie Minogue and Naomi Campbell, but little has changed since that golden era. Now it’s having a facelift courtesy of Bruno Reymond, internationally acclaimed designer and owner of La Maison d’Elephant, who will be upgrading the rooms and facilities, designing the new restaurant, and giving a modern injection to the décor of the outside terraces and pool area. The hotel is looking forward to a much needed refreshment and the NEW entertainment programme an exclusive MUST.

So, consider yourselves invited to the Ibiza Christmas Party at Pikes on Sunday December 23rd, featuring a live set from Nightmares on Wax (tbc) supplemented by local DJ’s Joan Ribas, David Phillips, Graham Sahara and Tomas Hedberg.

Pikes is open to all and looking forward to welcoming you…

2008 Plans

pikesAbout the hotel… Pikes Hotel, Ibiza’s most historic rock ‘n’ roll hotel opened its doors in 1980 and has throughout the years attracted a loyal following from the likes of Freddy Mercury, Grace Jones, Julio Iglesias, Kylie Minogue, Naomi Campbell and of course some of the most famous DJ names in the world. During the 80’s Pikes Hotel was the only place to see and be seen in Ibiza and the setting of some of the most notorious parties that this era had ever seen.

Having featured in many autobiographies and as the setting for one of the most famous pop videos in history, Wham’s Club Tropicana, the hotel has not changed one single bit since its golden era. Until now…

Hidden away up in the hills outside the vibrant nightlife of San Antonio, the hotel is a secluded and intimate venue and a welcome escape from the hectic Ibiza party scene. Each room is individually situated to create the feeling of complete tranquility and tucked away within the grounds so that maximum privacy is instilled.

Many rooms have evolved over the years with quirky features as a tribute to the most famous guests, who have chosen to make Pikes their home on Ibiza. Although the hotel is still as popular today as it was in its heyday, the time has come to regenerate and refresh the hotel and bring it into the 21st century in terms of both comfort and style.

The facelift…
Bruno Raymond, of La Maison d’Elephant fame, one of today’s most inspiring designer’s in Europe will personally be taking on this project. Taking a completely different thesis from his current work, he will be upgrading its rooms and facilities while keeping present its original, special and loved features. Bruno will also be designing the new restaurant, new outside cushioned terraces and furnishing the poolside area, to give it the modern injection that it needs.

The Restaurant…
The new restaurant at Pikes Hotel will be launching next season. An entirely new feature that has been missing from this destination hotel in the past. The new restaurant will also be open to non-residents allowing everyone who visits the island a taste of the magic that is Pikes. The ‘a la carte’ menu will feature modern British dishes with an international twist, signifying the cosmopolitan nature of Ibiza. Using local suppliers and producers and only seasonal produce. Each month guest chefs from around the world will be present, as an extra special highlight to our launch season.

pikesThe Bar…
Pikes famous Pool side bar will once again be a destination for all those wanting to experience a piece of Pikes’ history. The concept is to bring the bar to life from 3pm to 1am with a mix of live and digital performances combined with special guest appearances from both famous and noted musical talent. The poolside terrace will be transformed into a comfortable and magical open-air, twinkling oasis projecting over the hills to the town of San Antonio.

Sip Champagne and take in the breathtaking views while listening to the infamous Ibiza vibes. Impromptu performances and one off appearances will be a regular experience on a daily basis. Private terraces will also be available to hire and there will be a poolside tapas menu encompassing miniature portions of our lunch and evening menu for that special touch.

Ibiza Global Radio will be teaming up with Pikes for the summer, hosting Sunday sessions each week in the early afternoon and transmitting to the Island (and Europe) LIVE. Featuring International guest DJ’s and artists, this is sure to be a popular post-beach hangout to meet, relax and get in the mood for the evening or for a pre-dinner aperitif.

Pikes Arena, overlooked by the VIP and hotel terraces, will be a regular event’s space. Holding up to 1,000 people and attracting some of the most recognised and loved parties, plus island institutions like Ibiza Rocks and Nightmares On Wax parties. Expect famous faces and performances from the most famous names in the music world throughout the summer months.

nicky clarkeSome of the other surprises up their sleeve include a fully equipped interview area, with phenomenal views of Ibiza. The launch of a Pikes swimwear range designed by an A-list celebrity, at Ibiza’s first ever Fashion Week in August and the celebrity UK hairdresser, Nicky Clarke, to work from the hotel for a week in August.

Pikes will also be the Official Hotel for VIP guests at the numerous big Ibiza summer events, which would explain how it is that they will have daily sets from some of the most famous international DJ’s at the poolside bar.

The re-launch party is planned for May 2008 with VIP guests and international celebrities both past and present.
Your invitation should arrive in February…

The new golf course at Benimussa has been knocked back - although it would bring in high disposable income tourists (golfers) outside of the main tourist season, invest 100 million euros and create 300+ jobs

Currently the only course on the island is at Roca Lisa, and is not very “user friendly”. It’s understandable as they are a “private members club” - which means that they dont really want anyone other than their members playing golf there.

To play at Roca Lisa costs 90euros, and a buggy is 39 euros (this is according to their website which only lists their 2004 prices). On the mainland around the Orihuela Costa area alone (ie 30 mins from Alicante or Murcia airport) there at least 25 golf courses - none of which charge more than 70 odd euros in the high season (La Manga aside - which operates like Roca Lisa). Alicante Golf course for example charges 45 euros in low season (July-August) *and* includes a sat-nav buggy and a menu del dia - and is arguably one of the nicest courses on the Costa Blanca

Roca Lisa makes no distinction between playing at 10am in October or 3pm in August…

If the island wants to change its image then a naff new website complete with glaring spelling mistakes and not doing what it says its going to do is not the best way to go about it….

hpim1956.jpgSome of the team went *again* on another hike this afternoon - this time the hiking guide went out of the window - we’ve got a gps track which will be added to the main site and a new hiking section shortly.

So, the warm glow of achievement emanates from our site tonight as we announce the first of the IbizaA-Z hikes.

hpim1973.jpgHaving spent four days out in the field struggling with a badly translated and inaccurate hiking guidebook, meanwhile exploring countless dead-ends and cul de sacs, we are proud to present the highlights of two former hikes (that no longer work!), which we have neatly melded into one.

Our first born is called ‘Hike A’ and takes you through countryside and coastal scenery near to Portinatx, in the unspoilt north of the island.

hpim1993.jpgBecause it is being presented to you over the internet, we are able to provide vital pictures of all of the important junctions, alongside views along the route.

Check the activities section on the main site tomorrow afternoon…

Also some of the team are taking this hiking/walking far too seriously as they were off again today up into the north of the island - however the hiking guides they took were less than helpful and they got lost…

This evening we went into Ibiza Town to check out some live music at the new BLU, which used to be The Blue Rose - a "slightly" different place now…. Funcale were playing - it was good…

All change at the Blue Rose in Figueretas this winter. Completely refurbished, the poles have vanished from the stage to be replaced by musical equipment and a PA and lighting system fit to stage live bands; which is what they’re now doing every Friday night.

In similar fashion the audience of suited and sweaty elderly businessmen, with bulging wallets and things, have been replaced by a young Spanish audience enjoying the musical offerings of local bands playing indie rock music.
Blu is busy – it’s standing room only.

It’s not as if the venue hasn’t had its ups and downs. It held the first ‘sala de fiestas’ music license in Ibiza town – pre-dating even Pacha!

This license enables them to entertain with live music until 4 in the morning, so that’s exactly what they’re doing.
Tonight was the first of their regular Friday night sequence featuring local Ibicenco bands. Alternate Monday nights are ‘Cocoon’ nights featuring the renowned Cocoon DJs. Saturday nights are slated to feature the new Balearic sound epitomised by the likes of Jonathan Ulysses of Space and Andy Wilson of Sonica radio.

Following in the footsteps of the great Alfredo, some twenty years on you might say…

This new venue means business and looks set to potentially become an Ibiza town version of Santa Eulalia’s Guarana. Good luck to Sid Shanti and Marcus, the partners promoting these events. Another option for these winter evenings won’t go amiss.

As ever, click on the images for larger versions.
