September 13th was a very important day for football on Ibiza. It was the first time that two island teams had contested a game in Second Division B of the Spanish League. Football on Ibiza really is coming home in leaps and bounds, corners and goal scoring opportunities.

Almost as if by arrangement the game was preceded by a titanic struggle in English Premier League football - Liverpool v. Man Utd - in front of a capacity Anfield crowd of some 45,000 people. More like a Europen cup tie than an early season local derby, Liverpool triumphed in front of their home crowd, despite going a goal behind, and went to the top of the Premier League.

Was this to be prophetic? Could Santa Eulalia’s Peña Deportiva beat their rivals from ten kilometers down the road and leap above them in only their first season in the dizzy heights of Division 2 B. Starting the game on equal points, a win would leave them just 31 places shy of Barcelona and Real Madrid in the Spanish football hierarchy.

Parking was difficult, as it should be for a local derby of this stature, so on the long walk to the stadium the roar of the crowd made it clear that we’d missed kick off, but also served to quicken the pulse in expectation of this gladiatorial contest.

The attendance was a little lower than that at Anfield, for the simple reason that there is but a single stand, the main stand, at the Peña Deportiva stadium. This had been radically extended for today’s fixture and was equally divided between the Peña and Eivissa fans, as became clear when the ball finally found the back of the net.

However, the up-side of a single stand is that when there’s a stoppage in play you can enjoy a view of the sea on the horizon. This was particularly true when half time arrived and we still hadn’t found the scoreboard. Having arrived late this was a problem, but with the attendance apparently touching 1,500 we didn’t want to trouble any of the heavily outnumbered policemen, as you might if you were lost or didn’t know the time - instead we decided to assume that it was scoreless at that point and contented ourselves with admiring the thoughtfully arranged full moon rising out of the distant sea, whilst we waited for the second half to start.

The first half had gone the way of the home team, but without a breakthrough. This arrived after ten minutes of the second half when a carelessly conceded free kick resulted in an off the ball incident in the box for which the referee awarded a fairly generous penalty. Tino confidently put Santa Eulalia ahead when he sent the goally the wrong way with his spot kick. Half of the crowd went ballistic as the pitch succumbed to shade before the setting sun.

It remained a fairly evenly balanced contest for the next twenty minutes until a sweet move split the Eivissa defence allowing Heredia through to score a fine second goal for the home team. Ten minutes to go and the home team were both looking good and growing in confidence.

Meanwhile the ten local policemen, clearly worried by their largest challenge yet, turned their attention from the match and towards crowd control. Half of the ecstatic crowd had got the result they wanted and for the accountants at Peña Deportiva it was probably the biggest take on the gate they’d ever seen.

Nearly time to bring on Inter Milan and the rest…

In the meantime local bragging rights remain with the smaller town till the re-match in January.

santa eulaliasd ibizaNow that Santa Eulalia have been promoted they are now in the same division as S.D. Ibiza. This Saturday is the first of the 2 local derby’s - with Santa Eulalia hosting.

What makes it interesting is that they are on equal points and goal difference but with SD Eivissa just nudging it on goals scored (+3 as opposed to Santa Eulalia’s +2).

We shall be there…

Late this afternoon Pena Deportiva (Santa Eulalia) played FC Barcelona’s ‘B’ team in their first game of the season.

The cameraman got his blagging hat on and played the press card and managed to escape paying the 15 euro entry… He was rewarded however at half-time when the sprinklers decided to spray the entire terrace of people milling around in front of the bar, he just managed to turn away in time to protect the camera but got soaked in the process. Then to top it off the bar ran out of beer.

We thought Barca had taken the lead just before half time, however the goal was ruled out for offside. The coach Luis Ezcacho must have given the Deportivo players the ‘hair-dryer’ treatment at half time as the second half they looked much the better side with much more possession and more threatening attacks. We wish we could say who scored the Pena winning goal but we haven’t clue. (ed: after reading the local paper this morning it was the subsitute Tino).

We will definitely be attending more games and it will be all the more interesting as SD Eivissa and Pena Deportiva (Ibiza Town and Santa Eulalia) are both in the same division this year.

On a side note there was a great article in the Sunday Times today about Toni Lima who is the Technical Director of SD Eivissa. He also plays in Andorra’s international side - who are up against England in a world cup qialifier on 6th September. At Andorra’s last meeting against England in March 2007 he asked Wayne Rooney if he would sign for SD Eivissa…

Whilst we obviously cannot condone P2P networks that allow the distribution of copyrighted material we were definitely surprised to see tomorrow evenings game of Santa Eulalia vs Barcelona’s B team appear on a P2P tv site. (IB3 is the local free TV station so we think its ok).

They have the date wrong though - the game is tomorrow.

sd ibizaWe can’t reveal who they are yet but if all goes to plan SD Eivissa are lining up another friendly against an extremely well-known European football team.

According to our source at SD Ibiza, they are playing Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan on August 23rd… However Inter are playing Roma in the Italian Super Cup on the 24th so it’s probably their “B” team - which would make sense as they played Barcelona’s B team yesterday…

Kevin Sharkey, the legendary Irish artist, has another exhibition again in Ibiza, this time with two complete collections, consisting of two dozen new and vibrant paintings, full of energy that characterizes all his work.

“The Namibia Collection” and “White lines” can be seen at the elegant Nambia cafe in Santa Eulalia, from Thursday, July 10 until late August.

Following the success of his 2007 exhibition at the Chamber Ebusus of Ibiza, Sharkey, who has been described as-”the first superstar of art in Ireland” (Hot Press Magazine) shows two impressive collections that have been painted entirely in his study San Mateo and who are inspired by the light and energy of Ibiza.

The acclaimed and internationally recognized painter is one of the most quoted Irish artists and who has succeeded in selling one hundred percent of the works in his exhibitions in London, Dublin, New York and Mexico.

This is the first art exhibition that takes place in the cafe lounge Namibia, the new and elegant art cafe-restaurant in Santa Eulalia, located on the promenade, opposite the sea and by the fountain.

Santa Eulalia
Santa Eulalia is a five-star municipality, if the election motto of the new mayor Vicent Mari is to be believed.

So the town hall are sprucing up the public plazas and streets to make them even more attractive for residents and holidaymakers alike.

The same holds true for the local beach. Despite the fact that it is definitely an urban beach, it has numerous charms.
Locals, and tourists without transport, appreciate it…

Santa Eulalia’s beach is ideal for families who don’t want to transport their children, kit and caboodle very far.

Santa Eulalia
The comparatively wide sandy beach is clean and the beach promenade is great for a walk in the sun and some window shopping.

Bars, restaurants and other businesses are all just a stone’s throw from the beach and there’s no lack of diversity.

The long beach is split down the middle by a rocky outcrop and both sections offer a variety of water-based activities.

You can also hire loungers and umbrellas on the far southern half of the beach.

Tomorrow ’s Ibiza beach is Siesta beach.

As usual Guarana, in Santa Eulalia port, was packed for their sunday live music. Even though it’s open all year round, Alex the owner is always looking for an excuse to have a party so last night it was their Summer opening party. It was a great night - cheers Alex…

As Alex is the owner and a bit of a guitar player himself he doesn’t need an excuse to get up and play a couple of songs with the band (far right).

Nina’s restaurant in Santa Eulalia that was the home of Kevin & Perry’s apartment in the film Kevin & Perry Go Large has been reinvented, renamed to D’Jangos (with a possible reference to D’Jango Reinhardt ??) and has their opening party tomorrow night (Friday Night). It’s being themed as a jazz style, free flowing venue which we’re looking forward to. They also have free wifi - wonder why ;)

We reckon it will be a good night.

The throwaway line to Walter on Thursday night after he mentioned putting up an aircraft in the bar was “well, the magazine goes to print tues/weds so you’ll need to put up the plane over the weekend”…

So during sunday lunch at the nearby Los Corales bar today we get the phone call…. “The planes up” - Walter, Joel & Toni had spent all weekend till the early hours sorting out the plane - we had to go and take photos obviously…
