Tonight saw the second in this year’s summer Tuesday night sequence of Ibiza Rocks and, as a total contrast, we were treated to a gig at the Electric Bar’ deep inside the new Ibiza Rocks hotel.
I never went to Liverpool’s Cavern’, but I imagine it would have been something like this. A few more bobs and kipper ties no doubt, but low ceilings, strip lighting and a sweaty, expectant crowd. In fact nothing like last week’s outdoor gig at the horse trotting stadium, nor probably next week’s too…
It’s part of the beauty of the mystery tour’ concept. Like the hill parties of yore, the whereabouts of which were spirited to subversive music lovers by word of mouth. Early morning liaisons in the car parks of remote country pubs led to wild processions of headlights high up into the hills on rough caminos, to find themselves blocked in for days till everyone sobered up and went home.
Nowadays the laws are a bit tighter, and there are far more Guardia protecting the vested interests’ interests, so keeping the gig in-house’ could be construed as a favour to society - except that Ibiza Rocks lay on coaches to their parties… On the other hand, the mystery tour also lends itself nicely to the option of selecting venues according to ticket sales. We digress, with the ceiling only a matter of inches above the heads of the headline band, ‘One Night Only’, the atmosphere was sweaty and the young audience were heaving. Up front the occasional air borne beer increased the humidity, but didn’t dampen the atmosphere.
Suitably inspired, as they hammered out Started a Fire’, their 2008 hit single, the lead singer leapt onto the drum kit and smacked his head against the ceiling. Nobody laughed, they were all too busy singing along - after all it was only midnight and the party was set to finish at 5 in the morning…

The first of the Ibiza Rocks confirmed lineups and dates for 2008 are now in and its looking good for live music here in the summer. From the 17th June to 9th September, The Pigeon Detectives, The Wombats, The Fratellis, We Are Scientists, Reverend & The Makers, Soulwax and Pendulum will all be playing at Ibiza Rocks over the summer.
Tickets for the gigs will be 35 to 40euros (+ booking fee) and will be available from 11am (UK time) today. Click here to get your ibiza rocks tickets. Next up, as we announced last week, are The Pigeon Detectives who play the opening gig of Ibiza Rocks on 17th June |
 |
1st July - The Wombats headline |
 |
12th August - Reverend and The Makers return but headline this year.
13th August - Jon ‘The Rev’ McClure and his Rev Soundsystem will be joined with Sheffield pals DJ’s Matt Helders from the Arctic Monkeys and ex-Arctic Monkey Andy Nicholson at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel |
 |
9th September - One we’re personally really looking forward to is Pendulum playing the Ibiza Rocks Closing Party
|
At the Ibiza Rocks Hotel, our favourite guys The Hungover Stuntmen will open the Hotels’ Live Lounge on the 28th May, in June its the turn of Underground Heroes, after them in July its Reading based band OK Tokyo.
A brilliant idea this year will see people being able to use their mobile phone as their ticket to gain entry, thanks to Sony Ericsson. By logging on to www.ibizarocks.com, and selecting ‘mobile-ticket’ upon purchase of a ticket to a gig of their choice, fans can now opt for paper-free entry. Sony Ericsson will send customers a unique bar-code directly to their mobile that will be scanned by Ibiza Rocks hosts - bypassing the hassle of locating mislaid tickets…
Travel packages for all the gigs are available at www.ibizarockshotel.com
That’s the news for now - but there’s more to come…
